Start your Midwifery Career Close to Home with NSW Health


Registered nurses in Monaro are encouraged to start their midwifery careers by applying to become a midwifery student in a NSW public hospital. Applications have now opened for MidStart 2026 and close on June 2, 2025. Training locations are available across the state, including rural and regional areas like the Snowy Monaro.

Training includes completion of a postgraduate course and employment as a midwifery student to gain clinical experience. Steve Whan, Member for Monaro shared, “If you are looking to become a midwife, I recommend you consider Midstart as a pathway. This program is an excellent way to train for your future career while being able to live in your local community.”

Candidates may also be eligible for scholarships and study subsidies.
People are eligible to apply if they are:

  • an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident
  • a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia at the time of application.
