A perilous situation unfolded late on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, as emergency services executed a challenging rescue operation on the Numeralla River, saving six individuals trapped in a vehicle stranded on a flooded causeway. The ordeal commenced at approximately 11 pm when a single vehicle crashed and became precariously suspended from the Jacobs Lane causeway.

Officers from the Monaro Police District, supported by the State Emergency Service (SES), Rural Fire Service, and NSW Ambulance, swiftly responded to the crisis. SES flood rescue operators bravely entered the river to extract six persons, including three children, from the vehicle – all of whom were unharmed.
A spokesperson for the Monaro Police District said, “SES water flood rescue operators entered the water and rescued six people from inside the vehicle, who were trying to cross the river. NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed the patients on scene.”

Chief Inspector Malika Bailey of the SES highlighted the importance of adhering to safety warnings in flood conditions. “The SES always says, ‘If it’s flooded, forget it,’ and we really mean it,” Chief Inspector Bailey declared. “One bad decision can lead to a whole world of hurt. It puts you, your friends, your family – and the rescuers and their families – at risk. People must stop and think before engaging in risky behaviour.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by floodwaters, known for their deceptive appearance yet potentially lethal strength. Ms Bailey stressed the fortune of the occupants, as the vehicle did not completely submerge. “The waters may look easy to cross, but don’t be fooled; they can be very powerful and fast.”
Drivers are urged to heed the following advice:
* Avoid driving through flooded roads or causeways.
* Utilise the Hazards Near Me app for real-time hazard updates in your area.
* In life-threatening situations, immediately call triple zero.
