First Significant Snow Falls: Hopes High for Thrilling Winter Season

The Snowy Mountains welcomed the first significant snowfall of the 2025 winter season over the weekend, bringing fresh excitement to the region and dustings across the Thredbo and Perisher ski resorts. According to a report by Anthony Sharwood at Weatherzone, the weekend’s cold front was predicted to deliver a substantial blanket of snow across Australia’s mainland alpine regions. “Snow is predicted to fall to elevations as low as 900 metres by Sunday morning,” Sharwood reported, with approximately 5 centimetres expected at higher altitudes. Despite the promising forecast, it was the higher elevations that received the snow showers with approximately 2cm dusting the peaks.

This event marks the first significant snowfall of the year, after sporadic light snow earlier in May. A spokesperson for Thredbo Resort shared the excitement, stating, “Mother Nature came to the party on Saturday night… the mountain is looking FRESH!” With snowmaking operations already underway, Thredbo is making the most of the wintry conditions as they prepare for the official season opening on Saturday, June 7.

Despite the joyous welcome of snow, Weatherzone noted that this initial fall might be short-lived as showers and slightly warmer winds are expected to follow, potentially melting this early coating. Nonetheless, the snowfall has brought a wintry feel to the region, offering a glimpse of what the season ahead might hold.
