Fastest Growing Sport in the World: Pickleball Event in Cooma Tonight

Cooma Regional Sports Centre is set to buzz with excitement this evening as it plays host to a special Pickleball ‘Come and Try’ event. Scheduled to take place from 5 pm to 7 pm, May 13, this unique event welcomes participants of all ages, from 9 to 90, and provides all necessary equipment for newcomers eager to experience this rapidly growing sport.

Organised by local enthusiast Gary Bruce, the event promises to offer an engaging introduction to Pickleball, a dynamic sport reminiscent of badminton, table tennis, and tennis, played on a smaller court. “It’s a social game, but everyone can play either seriously, or simply come along each week to get fit and enjoy the game,” Bruce explains. He notes its popularity among retirees for its accessibility, while also highlighting its growing appeal among younger players.

The sports centre will accommodate interested participants with three courts tonight. “We’ve set up three courts because we don’t know how many people are going to turn up,” says Bruce, who will be gauging local interest with a survey tonight, to help plan future sessions.

The versatility of Pickleball, with its workout benefits and social aspects, is a key attraction. “It’s a very good workout, great for fitness, and a lot of people play for the social aspect as well,” Bruce adds. The sport’s rise in prominence is also attributed to endorsements by tennis legends such as Andre Agassi and John McEnroe, who have helped widen its appeal around the world.

Looking ahead, Gary has plans to host a similar event in Berridale, intending to mark the courts there following council approval. With enough interest, he advised there is the possibility of future friendly competitions between Cooma, Berridale, and Jindabyne, and also highlighted a path to join Pickleball Australia for those keen to take the sport more seriously.
