Damaging Winds Forecast in Snowy Mountains: Blizzard Warning for Higher Elevations

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a weather warning alerting residents to damaging winds set to impact parts of the Snowy Mountains. The adverse weather is anticipated to impact the region from this afternoon through to Wednesday morning, with elevations above 1400m forecast to experience potential blizzard conditions.

The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service has advised postponing back-country travel until the weather conditions improve, citing safety concerns.

A spokesperson for the BOM said, “For the ACT Ranges, Snowy Mountains and South Coast Ranges: Damaging winds are forecast averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h possible today and Wednesday morning, reaching up to 120 km/h about the South Coast Ranges tonight.”

“For Alpine areas above 1900 metres: Damaging winds averaging 75 to 85 km/h with peak gusts up to 120 km/h are possible today and early Wednesday.”

The areas of Cooma and Adaminaby are expected to be among those most affected by the severe winds according to the New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) Cooma-Monaro Unit, which has provided local recommendations to help residents stay safe during the adverse conditions.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

🪑 Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
