Damaging Winds Alert Issued for Snowy Mountains: Possible Blizzard Conditions Above 1400m

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds set to impact the southeastern parts of New South Wales. As strong northwesterly winds persist ahead of a significant cold front, the BOM warns of potentially dangerous conditions. The warning, which affects several areas along the Great Dividing Range and southern coastal regions, incorporates wind speeds averaging 55 to 65 km/h, with gusts exceeding 90 km/h expected to develop today and persist into Tuesday.

Vigorous westerly winds will follow the cold front on Tuesday, broadening the risk of damaging winds. These conditions are anticipated to ease below warning thresholds by Tuesday evening, though residents are advised to remain vigilant until then.

Potential blizzard conditions could develop over the Snowy Mountains district above 1400 metres. In light of these adverse weather conditions, the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service strongly recommends postponing any trips to the Kosciuszko National Park until further notice.

Local authorities are also on alert. The NSW Cooma-Monaro State Emergency Service (SES) Unit specifically highlights areas such as Bredbo, Adaminaby, Nimmitabel, and Numeralla as at risk. A spokesperson from the SES advises residents, “It’s crucial for those in the affected areas to take proper precautions. Secure loose items and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.”

As a precautionary measure, the SES also advises moving vehicles under cover or away from trees and keeping a safe distance of at least 8 metres from fallen power lines or potentially energised objects such as fences.
