Specialist Alpine Operations police have assisted in a multi-agency rescue after a man became unwell while hiking with a group in the Kosciuszko National Park overnight.

Two officers attached to Monaro Police District’s Alpine Operations Unit joined five SES Alpine Search and Rescue members and three Alpine-trained paramedics to meet a group of 11 hikers, who had called for assistance about 9.30am yesterday, Wednesday July 9, 2025.
Due to location, group size, patient condition and hazardous weather – including snow and high winds – a multi-agency operation was launched to meet the group near Illawong Hut within the national park.

On arrival, a 20-year-old man was assessed and extricated from the location using a specialist Alpine sled, before being taken for further medical assessment; a second member of the party also suffered a shoulder injury.
The rest of the group returned to Guthega and completed their trip early.
Police remind those visiting the Kosciusko National Park and surrounding areas to ensure they are properly prepared before venturing into alpine regions and monitor weather forecasts closely and continually as conditions change quickly.
