Jindabyne High School Makes History at Katrina Fanning Cup

In a historic achievement for Jindabyne High School (JHS), the school’s first-ever female Rugby League teams made their competitive debut at the Katrina Fanning Cup held in Tathra on May 20. Competing in the U14s and U16s categories, the JHS girls showcased remarkable progress, impressing onlookers and competitors alike.

Coached by Billy Lambert and Connor Mason, the teams were new to the game and faced off against seasoned opponents as a part of the nine a side sate wide regional competition for female secondary school students. Despite the challenge, the girls displayed exceptional determination and camaraderie, key strengths that drove their performance throughout the competition.

“The bravery and team spirit exhibited by the girls were truly inspiring,” noted co-coach Billy Lambert. “Each half, there was noticeable improvement, and it was thrilling to see several girls successfully crossing the try line.”

Among the notable achievements was Kaydence Phillips, who scored five tries, an impressive feat in her first tournament for JHS. Contributions also came from Marna Thompson, Chloe Frost, Kiera Frost, Charlotte Connelly, and Harlowe Burkett, all of whom showed improving skills as well as scoring tries.

Observers, including staff from the Canberra Raiders and opposition coaches, praised the JHS teams for their positivity and resilience on the field. Coach Lambert highlighted the attitude the girls played with saying, “Their ability to embody a ‘never give up’ spirit was just so pleasing to see.”

The young women not only represented their school but also their community with pride and passion. As they look forward to future competitions, the experience gained at the Katrina Fanning Cup will serve as a strong foundation for the ongoing development of Rugby League in the region.
