Trout Spawn Run 2025: Anglers Asked to Respect Rules in Region

The Snowy Mountains beckons anglers each year with the promise of exceptional fishing experiences, and during the annual trout spawn run, visitors have the chance to experience nature at its finest. Made better by seasonal conditions such as good rainfall in the catchments, breeding trout make their way from lake Jindabyne (Thredbo River) or Eucumbene Dam (Eucumbene River) to the headwaters of these two iconic waterways. From May 1, until the June long weekend, fishermen can enjoy the spectacle along the Eucumbene and Thredbo rivers, both renowned for their potential trophy-sized brown trout at this time of year, but are asked to adhere to NSW Fisheries rules.

This year, the 2025 spawn run draws to a close at midnight on Monday, June 9. As anglers prepare for their fishing trips in the Snowy Mountains, it’s important to adhere to specific rules designed to manage fish populations sustainably. Spokesperson for NSW Fisheries shares, “We permit one attended rod and line with up to two hooks using artificial flies or lures. Remember, gear rigged for bait fishing is prohibited.” Visitors are reminded they can carry up to three rods and lines rigged with artificial flies or lures, though only one may be in use at any time.

Each fisher is allowed a daily bag limit of one trout with a possession cap of two, with a legal length requirement of 50 cm. The allure of these waters, particularly following rainfall that prompts trout from Lake Jindabyne and Eucumbene Dam to ascend the rivers for spawning, creates a vibrant fishing atmosphere.

Enthusiasts are urged to respect fellow anglers and preserve the pristine environment by disposing of litter responsibly. “Our fisheries compliance officers are vigilant, regularly patrolling the Snowy Mountains region,” adds the spokesperson. Any illegal activities should be reported to the Fishers Watch Phoneline at 1800 043 536.

While river and stream fishing will pause after June 9 until the October long weekend, opportunities to wet a line are still available in the year-round open impoundments, such as Jindabyne and Eucumbene.
