Australia Post Announces Multi-Million-Dollar Investment in Regional NSW

Australia Post has unveiled a significant multi-million-dollar infrastructure investment aimed at enhancing its operations across regional New South Wales, with the Snowy Mountains region set to benefit. The initiative involves the development of six brand-new greenfield sites in the towns of Tumut, Leeton, Casino, Deniliquin, Forbes, and Byron Bay, with discussions for leases on brownfield sites also underway in Cooma, and Ballina.

Residents of the Snowy Mountains could expect improved postal services and greater efficiency in parcel delivery in the near future. The new site in Tumut is already under construction and is scheduled to open by late 2025. In Cooma, a lease negotiation for a brownfield site is underway, which could further enhance local postal services by creating more space to cater for increased deliveries. As part of the expansion a brownfield site has already been secured in Narrandera.

This strategic expansion seeks to address the growing demand for parcel delivery in regional areas, with the purpose-built facilities designed to process between 900 to 2,200 parcels per day. These investments are essential as online shopping continues to rise, with a reported 82 percent of NSW households now making purchases online.

Shane Plant, General Manager Network Development and Support Services at Australia Post, emphasised the necessity of the development. “In New South Wales, we’ve seen online purchases increase by 2.8% year-on-year,” he said. “As regional areas increasingly depend on eCommerce due to fewer physical retail offerings, these purpose-built sites will enable Australia Post to meet the growing parcel demand in these regions.”

A spokesperson for Australia Post highlighted the environmental sustainability commitment of these projects. Each site will incorporate 50kW rooftop solar power generation, and many will also include rainwater harvesting and EV charging capabilities, ensuring that the expansion is environmentally responsible.
