Transformation: Paddock in Cooma Set-to Become Emergency Disaster Response Hub

Cooma is set to become home to a state-of-the-art emergency management centre in the Polo Flat area, as the NSW Government announces plans for a new bushfire and emergency hub designed to strengthen disaster response capabilities across Snowy Monaro. The $15 million investment reportedly aligns with the findings of the 2020 NSW Bushfire Inquiry, which highlighted the need for upgraded infrastructure to better tackle natural disasters.

The facility will be strategically located beside the existing Fire Control Centre (FCC) and the Cooma/Polo Flat Aerodrome, enhancing its utility and accessibility. Construction will be led by Zauner Construction Pty Ltd who have been awarded the contract, and managed by NSW Public Works.

The project will commence soon and is set to transform what is currently a bare paddock into a vital community asset.

The new hub will integrate a Fire Control Centre, Emergency Operations Centre, and aviation facilities, bringing together emergency management experts under one roof. This will not only streamline coordination but also improve frontline capabilities during emergencies. The state-of-the-art facility will feature purpose-built workspaces and technologically advanced training rooms, meeting the demands of modern firefighting and rescue operations.

Member for Monaro, Steve Whan, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting the region’s history of large bushfires.

“Our region has a history of large bushfires, and this centre will provide the facilities, technology, and working conditions to ensure that our incredible, dedicated emergency service volunteers and staff can provide the most effective responses possible,” Mr Whan said.

Commissioner of the RFS Rob Rogers emphasised the broader impact of the new facility, stating, “This new centre will not only support day-to-day operations but also better equip our personnel to manage multi-agency responses to a range of hazards.”

Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib highlighted the importance of the centre, stating, “This new centre will be a vital resource for those on the frontline and provide our volunteers with the best possible infrastructure to assist in firefighting efforts. These investments are vital in remote and rugged parts of the region.”
