2025 Federal Election Results: Labor Triumphs, Kristy McBain Retains Eden-Monaro

Eden-Monaro, has spoken, reaffirming its support for the Labor Party as Kristy McBain secures her position as the Federal Member in the 2025 Australian Federal Election. The election, conducted on May 3, 2025, resulted in a landslide victory for the Labor Party nationwide, predicted to hold 83 seats and form a majority government.

With 86.1 percent of the vote counted in Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain is predicted to enjoy a 0.61 percent swing in her favour. Currently, she has claimed 43.2 percent of the primary vote, outpacing her Liberal rival, Jo van der Plaat, who garnered 32.3 percent. In the critical two-party preferred statistics, Labor leads with 56.7 percent compared to the Liberals’ 43.3 percent, according to the Guardian.

Ms McBain expressed her gratitude, stating, “My deepest thanks to our amazing community for putting their trust in me again to represent them. I will continue to work hard for everyone in Eden-Monaro in a positive way that unites us.” She thanked her family, team, volunteers, and colleagues, acknowledging the support that enables her to serve.

Jo van der Plaat acknowledged her defeat, having earlier called Kristy McBain to concede. She remarked on the enriching experience of her candidacy.

Ms van der Plaat said, “Being a candidate for 18 months has given me the incredible opportunity to get to know my community better and I will never be able to thank enough, the people who came out to support me.”

On the national stage, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to become the first Labor leader re-elected since Bob Hawke in 1990 and the first Prime Minister re-elected since John Howard in 2004. In a dramatic twist, Coalition leader Peter Dutton, a stalwart of the Liberal Party, was unseated in the electorate of Dickson by Labor’s Ali France, marking the end of his 20-year tenure in parliament.

As of 6 pm on Sunday, May 4, 2025, 76.02 percent of votes have been counted nationally, confirming 127 out of 150 seats in the House of Representatives. The election marks a significant political shift as voters across Australia, including Eden-Monaro, have voiced their preferences, shaping the country’s political landscape for the coming years.
